Performativitetsteori är ett redskap vid tolkningen av samspelet mellan visuella gestaltningar och människors identitetsskapande verksamheter. I samma mening skiljer Judith Butler åt skillnaden mellan "kön är en prestation" (staging, en handling) och "gender is performative".
